I decided not to use a lot of the songs I wrote over the summer for the band and decided to write new stuff. I think its better, but it's different. I got mad influence from Justice and Explosions in the Sky as well as the Arcade Fire and MGMT. But on the whole its my oooown jammmm. Check it out below.
This summer I wrote six demos for the band next year; here they are. I don't really know what genre they will fit in, but I think they all fit in the same, which is good.
I've decided to get on the Youtube band wagon, I'm going to post covers and originals...It's something to do while hanging out in Spencer, Iowa for an entire summer.
It's a bit of a mess genre wise, but who knows, maybe we'll streamline our shit next year or something. But David Moench won't be here...perhaps we'll make a new band.
The recordings are finally done! Big thanks to David Moench for recording and mixing the tracks. I believe they're all in order, though I can't remember exactly and am too lazy to go back into the libretto to check.
This is my second full length musical, I started it near the end of the summer, and took about three months to write and one month to fine tune. It's definitely far from perfect, but I believe it is much better than my previous (though maybe not as much fun to put on, not saying it isn't awesome to put up any musical) and it means a lot more to me that Jaws did. It's also not completely ridiculous like Jaws.
Here's a plot;
Union and Annie are two friends who have ended up living together in an apartment. Knowing each other since they were children, their lifelong friendship seems to have been held together through a mutual interest in chess. However, when long withheld emotions finally surface in a misunderstanding, their relationship is changed forever, and ultimately leads to a murder. This is original show written by Robert Rusli which is a contemporary musical told in a non-linear approach.
Kotov Syndrome: A phenomenon in chess where a player cannot come up with a clear path out of a complicated position, and consequently makes an hasty move, often irrational and unanalyzed—a common form of mistake which can cost the game.
I took a lot of inspiration from Jason Robert Brown (Pre 13), especially the Last 5 Years and Songs for a New World. I learned a great deal about piano phrasing from this musical, and I'm pretty happy with the outcome. It's also my application of things I learned from my summer at the NYU Musical theater summer program...Enjoy.
