I'm pretty happy with it, but when I had 15 minutes alone with the Wesleyan Jazz Orchestra to try to get a real recording of it, we didn't have enough time to pull the piece together, plus the recording device malfunctioned so I don't have a good recording of live instruments. When I heard it live it didn't sound exactly the same as my MIDI recording; the piece definitely could use some work, like cleaning up some of the saxophone and trumbone harmonies. I don't usually orchestrate for Jazz Orchestra, but I thought I could learn something from the class, and I did!

Toxic Arrangement.mp3

Pro Producers using Garageband loops?

I just had to post this somewhere, and it's music related so it's going here; I was browsing through garageband loops and I found the producers for "Umbrella" by Rihanna used the loop "Vintage Funk Kit 03" crazy right? He opens his closet and picks out his suit. At the same time, the men are running up the stairs. Jack continues on his routine by looking into a mirror as he goes about fixing his hair. Out of the corner of his eye he notices as a door slowly opens to reveal the business end of a SEMI-AUTOMATIC MACHINE GUN. He spins out of the way as his mirror is shattered in a hail of gunfire. Immediately Jack whips out both of his handguns and returns fire. The ASSASSIN is hit in the neck and starts to spray bright red blood. He grabs his wound and continues to fire. ASSASSIN TWO darts into the room providing cover fire for Assassin One. Jack dives behind his bed, lands on his back, rolls around once, and shoots Assassin Two in the head. His brains explode onto the wall behind him as he slumps to the floor. A THIRD ASSASSIN enters the room, taking Assassin two's place. Jack is able get to his knees and use his bed as cover. Feathers and blood are everywhere. Still in his boxers, Jack is struggling to get his pants on. His enemies are closing in on him. Assassin One is now right on top of him. As he raises his weapon, he is blown out of frame. Jamie is seen as he pumps his SHOTGUN. Now on his back, Jack starts firing his handguns wildly, which in turn propel him backwards along the floor. Assassin three is completely shot up and fall dead. Song 1 stops. A FORTH ASSASSIN enters the room but stops suddenly as he notices his fallen comrades. Jack quickly adjusts his aim but the assassin concordantly turns his gun on Jamie. Using only one hand Jamie digs his shotgun into the assassin's chest. The Assassin slowly orbits around Jamie so that Jack no longer has clear angle to shoot him. Jamie counters this motion. There is a short moment of silence as the two men slowly move around each other. Jack cant get a clear shot. With his free hand, Jamie slowly reaches into his coat and pulls out a cigarette which he puts into his mouth. With the same hand He reaches back into his jacket and pulls out a lighter. He attempts to light his cigarette, but it is difficult with only one hand. With each attempt the Assassin becomes more and more nervous. Jamie is able to get a consistent flame on his forth attempt, but at that same moment fear takes hold of the Assassin and everyone unloads their weapons into their targets. The assassin flies backward into the wall, smearing blood as he falls to the floor. Jack looks at Jamie. Jamie takes a drag off of his cigarette.

JAMIE

(confused)

The fuck you lookin' at?

Jamie looks down, he is bleeding badly.

JAMIE

Oh.

Jamie slumps to the floor. As he sings, he once more goes through his morning routine. He picks out his suit, and combs his hair. Everything is shot exactly as it was before. The apartment itself is still a little beat up from the gunfight. Jack has tried his best to duct tape his mirror back together. When he is almost ready to go, Jack walks over to his window and checks to make sure that it's safe to go outside. The White Van is still there, but next to it is a bunch of trash cans and a pile of dead assassins. Jack leaves.

CUT TO:

INT.Cafe & Jacks Car.Day

Jessica, who is now waiting for Jack at the cafe, continues her song. The camera cuts to Jack. He is singing in his car, which is en route to the cafe. The two locations are intercut to create a duet/medley that climaxes in a split-screen. Song 3 ends. Jack gets out of his car and walks into the cafe. The place is trashed and Jessica is gone.

JACK

(sternly)

Damn.

Fade out.

INT.WAREHOUSE.DAY

The scene begins in complete darkness. Janus pulls out an extremely large revolver and points it at Jessica. All of a sudden a door springs open filling the room with significantly more light. Jack enters with Jamie's shotgun around his back and pistols in each hand. There is a short moment of silence as Jack sizes up his opponents. In the corner a couple of Assassins are playing cards.

GOON

Is that him?

Jack shoots the Goon in the head and he immediately falls dead. All hell breaks loose. The Assassins flip over their table for cover. An ash tray and playing cards go everywhere. Jessica is also knocked to the ground. This brakes the chair and allows her to escape. Jack runs toward card table and pushes it against a wall, pinning the three assassins. He unloads his Pistols into them from point blank range. They fall awkwardly onto the overturned table. From across the room, a shot whizzes into Jack's shoulder. It came from Janus. Janus licks the barrel of her gun and once more takes aim. Jack drops his pistols and readies the shotgun. They both fire. Jack is hit on the side and Janus is hit in her chest. Her pistol flies out of her hand and she slowly falls to the ground. Jessica runs over to Jack to see if he's ok.

JESSICA

Jack!

JACK

(panting)

I'm fine.

She helps him to his feet and they begin to sing SONG FOUR.

JACK

This is the life I live, it’s my purpose…

Something I can’t deny, anymore.

Though I’m not proud,

What else can I do?

Killing’s what god made me for.

And I can’t’ tell you how to live your life,

But I can tell you how I live mine.

I walked straight forward with a gun in my hand,

Thinking some day soon it’ll be my time.

Jack gets off the ground or something

JESSICA (JACK)

Why did you risk your life just to save me? Jack and Jessica are unaware that Janus is alive. As the song comes to it's climax the camera tracks in on Jack as he pulls Jessica into his arms and they kiss. It's definitely far from perfect, but I believe it is much better than my previous (though maybe not as much fun to put on, not saying it isn't awesome to put up any musical) and it means a lot more to me that Jaws did. It's also not completely ridiculous like Jaws.

Here's a plot;

Union and Annie are two friends who have ended up living together in an apartment. Knowing each other since they were children, their lifelong friendship seems to have been held together through a mutual interest in chess. However, when long withheld emotions finally surface in a misunderstanding, their relationship is changed forever, and ultimately leads to a murder. This is original show written by Robert Rusli which is a contemporary musical told in a non-linear approach.

Kotov Syndrome: A phenomenon in chess where a player cannot come up with a clear path out of a complicated position, and consequently makes an hasty move, often irrational and unanalyzed—a common form of mistake which can cost the game.

I took a lot of inspiration from Jason Robert Brown (Pre 13), especially the Last 5 Years and Songs for a New World. I learned a great deal about piano phrasing from this musical, and I'm pretty happy with the outcome. It's also my application of things I learned from my summer at the NYU Musical theater summer program...Enjoy.

The Kotov Syndrome: A Contemporary Musical from Robert Rusli on Vimeo.

8) Critically Endangered (Ft. The recording quality isn't very good, and this is a rehearsal draft, so the players only had about half an hour to practice before hand. So don't judge it on the mistakes the players make, and they were all mad good instrumentalists. I played double bass on this song for the concert, but I did this recording at home so I played electric bass since I don't own a double bass. Anyways, thanks to Greg Woodbridge (High School Conductor/ Music Director) for guiding me when I wrote it.

*Note* Camargue is a place in France with wild horses, and I thought it was classy at the time and it reminded me of wild running feral horses.

Camargue.mp3

4) A Girl and a Tree (10 Minute Mini Musical)

I wrote this 10 minute musical in collaboration with lyricist Jack Moore over the summer at NYU where we had a reading of it with broadway singers. The singers and pianist pretty much sight read the thing (They only had 2 hours of rehearsal the day before), so it's not done perfectly, but what they did get right they got right really well.

"A Girl and a Tree" is a tale of love, betrayal, and fetishes. It begins when Louis, the protagonist, who is a construction worker and slept in late. The movie's about a boy who tries to go to school but gets attacked by a ninja. The trailer music is supposed to be much more epic than the premise, but captures the spirit of the boy as he rises to the occasion. I wrote it in 4 hours so it's only with midi instruments, sorry, I didn't have time to gather up a full orchestra. I'll probably post the actual score for the movie later, it uses the same theme.

A Man When He Fights a Ninja FINAL.mp3
